Mary is joined by the extraordinary Harry the Piano for this programme delving into the world of Berlin cabaret and political theatre between 1900-1933. Songs from this era often challenged society’s traditional attitudes to sex and relationships, or commented on the social injustices that would herald the rise of Nazism and Hitler’s chancellorship in 1933.
Songs include Spoliansky and Schiffer’s gender-busting ‘Maskulinum-Femininum’, Hollander’s feminist anthem ‘Chuck Out the Men’, Marlene Dietrich’s international hit ‘Falling in Love Again’ - Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss...’ and Weill and Brecht’s ‘Mackie Messer’ and ‘Surabaya Johnny’.
